Jackie and Shadow

Red, White, and Fluffy: Jackie and Shadow’s Eaglets Are Here

Easter weekend brought something we don’t get nearly enough of anymore, which is good news that didn’t need to be explained or argued over. Some of it came in a big, dramatic way, like the high-risk operation that pulled two American airmen out of Iran, the kind of rescue where a dozen things could have gone wrong and somehow didn’t. At the very same time, though, something much quieter was happening in a nest high above Big Bear, and it ended up pulling in just as many people for completely different reasons.

The Eagles Have Landed Hatched!

Two bald eagle chicks were making their way into the world.

Jackie and Shadow, who have built a following without trying to, welcomed both eaglets over the weekend while thousands of people tuned in to watch it happen live. There was no production around it and no effort to make it look like anything other than what it was, which meant viewers got to see the entire process as it actually unfolds. The first chick took its time and worked its way out over more than a day, while the second followed the next morning and looked just as unsure of itself once it arrived.

At that stage, nothing about it looks polished or impressive. The chicks wobble more than they walk, their heads are a little too heavy for their bodies, and even the simplest movements take effort. It is easy to see why people call them bobbleheads, because that is exactly what they look like. Still, they begin to stretch, shift, and figure things out little by little, while their parents handle everything else with a kind of steady patience that does not need to be taught.

The Art Of Slowing Down

What stands out is not just what is happening in the nest, but how people respond to it. Nobody had to tell them to watch. They found it, stayed longer than they meant to, and came back later to check on it again.

People stuck around for the first feeding, even though it was awkward and uneven. They watched the small movements and the quiet stretches in between, where nothing much was happening at all.

There was no big moment to wait for and no payoff being promised, yet it held their attention anyway. That kind of attention is hard to come by now. It’s quiet. A little repetitive, even. But people kept watching anyway, letting it play in the background and coming back to it later.

Nothing complicated. Just something worth watching for a minute.
